Exclusive Interview with Dr. Arun Sharma: Unlocking the Wisdom of Ayurveda’s 3 Pillars of Health
Monday, 4 November 2024
In an illuminating conversation at Ayuskama Ayurveda Institute, RAY Healing’s recent interview with Dr. Arun Sharma, known as the "Encyclopedia of Ayurveda," offered profound insights into the 3 essential Pillars of Health according to Ayurvedic philosophy: Diet, Sleep, and Exercise. These pillars, Dr. Sharma explained, are fundamental to sustaining balance and harmony within the body and mind, guiding us toward true wellness.
Diet: The Ayurvedic Foundation
Dr. Sharma explained that diet is foundational in Ayurveda, with a focus on whole, natural foods that support digestion and nourishment. He highlighted the role of Ghee, a form of clarified butter, celebrated for its ability to support digestion, nourish tissues, and carry the properties of herbs deeply into the body. Used in moderation and based on one’s Dosha, Ghee plays a unique role in balancing internal energies and enhancing the effects of Ayurvedic preparations. Dr. Sharma emphasized that selecting foods and cooking methods suitable to one’s constitution is essential, helping to maintain balance and prevent health issues over time.
Sleep: The Healer
Sleep, according to Dr. Sharma, is an indispensable pillar of health that allows the body and mind to repair and rejuvenate. In Ayurveda, restful sleep is seen as a cornerstone of vitality, affecting everything from immunity to emotional stability. Dr. Sharma shared practical advice on cultivating good sleep habits, tailored to different Dosha types, to help people experience deeper rest and recovery.
Exercise: A Balanced Approach
Ayurveda advocates for exercise that suits one’s individual constitution. For instance, while a Pitta type might benefit from cooling, gentle movement, a Kapha type might require more vigorous activity. Dr. Sharma encouraged listeners to find movement that feels nourishing rather than depleting, reinforcing that balance, rather than intensity, is the Ayurvedic approach to fitness.
Dosha and Balance
Central to Dr. Sharma's discussion was the Dosha system, which categorizes individuals by three primary energies—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Understanding one’s Dosha and how it interacts with these pillars is essential for maintaining balance, which, according to Ayurveda, is the essence of health. Misalignment can manifest as stress, digestive issues, or other health problems, underscoring the importance of consulting a qualified practitioner.
One critical takeaway Dr. Sharma stressed was the need for guidance when using Ayurvedic herbs. “Never take Ayurvedic herbs without consulting a practitioner,” he advised, pointing out that self-prescription can sometimes lead to adverse effects, especially without understanding the complexities of Doshas.
As a fun closing to the interview, Dr. Sharma issued a challenge to the audience: “Name a 4th function of the human body and win a prize!” A call to explore and connect with Ayurveda, this question adds a layer of engagement to his teachings.
